Born on March 5, 1927, in Topeka, Ill., to Tony A. and Venice Caroline Wiemer Behrends, he married Betty V. Kelly on July 22, 1951, in East Peoria. She survives.
Also surviving are three children, Janice (R. Kim) Williams of Naperville, Ill., Julia Behrends of East Peoria and Scott (Sonja) Behrends of Raleigh, N.C.; five grandchildren, Christopher, Scott and Alex Williams, and Tyler and Leah Behrends; and many other loving family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Frances Hellemann; and three brothers, Raymond, Bernard and Donald Behrends.
Bertwin was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II.
He worked as a supervisor in engineering at Caterpillar Tractor Co. for 36 years.
Bertwin was a member of the First United Methodist Church in East Peoria for more than 50 years, was a member of the East Peoria District 86 School Board for 10 years and was a member of the East Peoria Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of Theta Xi Fraternity at Bradley University, and a member of the Hilton Lodge in East Peoria.
Burial will be in Fondulac Cemetery in East Peoria, where military rites will be accorded.
