He was adopted by Charles Wm. Roberts and his wife Phobe Shellhorn. His biological parents were Charles James Hurley from Logan Co., Bellefontaine, OH and Ms. Heller, whose parents originated from Miami Co., OH. Why the adoption took place has
not been identified yet, but the mother came to live with him and Blanche for a time. He was a bookkeeper when he lived at the Miles' boarding house on Sherman Drive. He then worked for Kaufman Egg Noodle and Bartlett Tea Company as a salesman.
During the Depression they moved often, usually right before the rent was due. In his later years he went into business with his only son William. They were door-to-door salesmen for National Household Distributors. When that failed he managed
Deering Cleaners on Emerson Ave before his retirement.
