John lived and raised his family in the family home built in Bryson City, Swain County, NC. There was a lower creek and a stone wall built. John divided up his land holdings before his death given to his children. If they did not receive land, then they received the equivalent in money. For instant, Claude De Hart, one of John's sons, built his home and farmed, and raised his family after he married on the land he inherited and died there peacefully. Claude's Daugther, knew her grandpa John Thomas and family information, and whom also had a copy of the De Hart Family Bible, maintained throughout the years by various children of John's and lastly for some period of time by his daugther, Mary Sue till her death, and finished off the few that needed the date of death by John's great grandaughter, and his granddaughter.

John Thomas dies at home following a short illness, of about 12 days. Funeral services were held at John's residence the following day after his death. John was a sucessful business man and farmer of Bryson City, North Carolina. At the time of John's death, but now deceased, were 3 daugthers, Mrs. Vergie Eller of Hayesville, Mrs. Frank Weeks, and Miss Mary Sue De Hart of Bryson City, six sons Fred, Claude, Will, Dan, and Kermit De Hart of Bryson City, and Ebb De Hart of Washington State; 23 grand children; 2 sisters Miss Mary De Hart of Bryson City, and Mrs Letha Dalbraigh of Washington State; and S. A. and Will De Hart of Bryson City.
