Carrie Addie, daughter of Wm Harris and Rose Ann (Phipps) Sowers, was born in Nodaway County, MO, March 15, 1872. She was the grandaughter of Lewis Sowers who migrated to Thomas county, KS in 1886, by covered wagon.
She married Albert Criger, December 10, 1890, Clearmont, Nodaway, MO. They had a son, Albert Monroe, April 1891.
Albert Sr. died March 1898.
Carrie, a new widow, came out to Thomas county, KS with her young son, Albert to care for her Aunt Mary (Mollie) Sowers who was gravely ill.
Carrie met Peter C. Nelson, who was working for her grandfather Lewis Sowers, at that time.
Peter, who was a lover of horses, went courting in a fancy cart and fast-stepping team to the Sowers's home to see Carrie. The courtship lasted a year and on January 1, 1899 they were married at the home of Malangton (Lank) abd Ruth Sowers, Carrie's aunt and uncle, in their farm home near Mingo, KS.
Peter and Carrie lived first in a sod house 4 miles south of Colby on land owned by Peter but soon moved to the Hubbard Ranch near Cumberland, KS where Wray Harris was born, April 17, 1900 and Cloyd Byron was born November 16, 1901. Using their homestead rights in 1903 they bought a Relinqhishment Claim to a homestead in Rawlins county, KS where Fryma Rose was born March 15, 1905 and Geneva Bell born September 18, 1909. Vida Uell was born October 6, 1912 near Tully, KS. In 1914 Peter and Carrie sold the homestead and used the proceeds to help purchase a farm on the Rawlins-Thomas county line, part of which lay in Thomas county. Peter was known for his buying, selling, and trading horses.
In 1922 Peter and Carrie moved to Colby with their 3 daughters and their son Cloyd and wife Lois moved to the farm.
Through the years Carrie took an active part in Sunday School and church activities at Cumberland, Lone Star, and Colby Methodist Church.
Peter died March 5, 1948 and Carrie died September 6, 1958. They are both buried in Beulah cemetery at Colby, KS.
Children are: Wray Harris married Erlyce Edwards; Cloyd Byron married Lois Robinson; Fryma Rose married Irl Amos and 2nd Lewis Fannell; Geneva Bell married Carl Philipp; Vida Uell married Harold Toburen; There were 17 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren. A generation apart their youngest grandchild, Robert Toburen, and their oldest great-grandchild, Sheila Sloan (Frahm) went through the Colby Schools together in the same class and graduated from Colby Community High School in 1963.
