The community northwest of Newton and numerous friends in the city were shocked and deeply grieved Sunday to learn of the sudden death of Mrs. Atch Prouty, which occurred at the home northwest of town from heart failure during the forenoon. Mrs. Prouty, it is stated, had suffered slight attacks of heart trouble but she was apparently in good health and the best of spirits Sunday morning. The family was away from home when the fatal attack came. Mrs. Prouty had called her sister, Mrs. Alvin Royer by telephone about nine o'clock, asking her to come over to dinner. Mrs. Royer promised to call later, and did so, receiving no reply. She went to the Prouty home about 11:30, and found her sister lying upon a bed, with evidence that Mrs. Prouty had been engaged in making up the bed when she was stricken, and collapsed, being unable to summon aid or attract anyone's attention. The father and son were at a neighbor's and were quickly summoned. Mrs. Prouty was 35 years old. She was the daughter of Mr, and Mrs. W. C. Pierce, who survive. Besides the husband there is one son, Harry, 16 years of age. There are three brothers, George and Will Pierce of Newton, Harold of Rattlesnake Buttes, Colo., two sisters, Mrs. Marian Dunlavy and Mrs. Alvin Royer, west of Newton, and also an adopted brother Theodore of Newton. Mrs. Prouty was born and grew to womanhood in Harvey County. She was a woman of many sterling qualities and had the highest esteem of all. Mr. and Mrs. Prouty were married Aug. 1, 1905. She was a member of Newton chapter, No. 5. O. E. S., and the chapter will conduct their service at the church and also at Greenwood cemetery, where interment will be made. The funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian church here Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 O'Clock, incharge of Dr. A. H. Morrison. Mrs. Prouty will be at the home of her parents, 724 West Broadway, untill the time of the funeral. Newton Kansan Nov. 5, 1923
