He was still a resident of New London, Conn. when he first enlisted as a Private on April 22, 1861. On May 7, 1861 he mustered in to Company E of the 2nd Infantry Regiment Connecticut (known as "Rifle Company C"). He mustered out of this regiment on Aug. 7, 1861 at New Haven, Conn.
On March 5, 1862 he re-enlisted and was mustered in to Company C of the 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment of Connecticut. He did not survive the war and died of disease on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1862.
