The LLOYDS was bringing the wives and children of the men who had gone ahead earlier on expeditionary ships.
Sarah married Richard in 1838, 3 years before they departed England. She was 18 at that time and he was 23. Sarah gave birth to a boy during the voyage, 1 month after departure and called him Richard Atlantic. He died the following month. She was also bringing the two children from Richard's first marriage, George and Harriett - aged 5 & 4. George died during the voyage, 5 days after baby Richard.
They settled in Nelson and had 11 (known) children, all born in the Nelson area, from 1845 to 1864 by which time Sarah was 44 and Richard was 59.
She died 21 years after him.
