REGINALD W. "REGGIE" AUSTIN, SR.

NEWCOMB, N.Y. -- Reginald W. Austin Sr., 75 of Winebrook Hills, Newcomb, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at the Glens Falls Hospital, following a long illness. He had been living at the Moses-Ludington Nursing Home in Ticonderoga, N.Y. Born March 11, 1927, in East Bakersfield, Vt., he was the son of the late Wayne E. and Hildred (Vadney) Austin. Mr. Austin was a graduate of Brigham Academy in Bakersfield. He served almost nine years in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. Following his discharge, he moved to Tahawus, N.Y. with his family in 1955. He spent 34 years employed at NL Industries until his retirement in 1989. For a number of years, he was in charge of the water and sewer treatment plant for the development of Winebrook Hills in Newcomb, where he resided. He was a member of the VFW Post 918, the American Legion Post 1713, and the Newcomb Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Austin is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lorraine "Lumbra" of Newcomb; a daughter, Deborah Barrigar of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; a son, Reginald W. Austin Jr. of Long Lake, N.Y.; two sisters, Shirley Duffy and her husband Douglas of Wilton, N.Y., and Winona Underwood of St. Albans; two brothers, Calvin Austin and his wife Phyllis of Lake Havasu, Arizona, and Wendell Austin of California; a sister-in-law, Doris Austin of Edgewater, Md.; four grandchildren, Christopher Barrigar of Atlanta, Ga., Amanda Barrigar of Fort Edward, N.Y., Holli Campbell and her husband Casey of Irmo, S.C., and Jenni Austin of Lexington, S.C.; one great-grandchild., Brantley of Irmo, S.C., who was born on Reginald's birthday in 2000; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat, Muffin. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers, Robert, Lathrop and Lawrence Austin, and a nephew, Lawrence Austin Jr.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at St. Therese' Catholic Church, Newcomb, N.Y. Interment will be at St. Isidores Cemetery, Montgomery Center, Vermont, in the spring. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Edward L. Kelly Funeral Home in Schroon Lake, N.Y. Donations in his memory may be made to the Newcomb Rescue Squad, or St. Therese Catholic Church in Newcomb, N.Y., 12852.
