THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, Charlotte, NC, obituary, published July 12, 2000

THOMAS ALFRED "AL" BROWNE, 92, of Charlotte, NC died on Sunday, July 9, 2000 at his home.

He was born July 24, 1907 in Tarboro, NC, a son of the late Robert Cotten Brown and Cynthia Kirkpatrick Brown. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Renfrow Browne in 1965. Al attended the public schools in Mecklenburg County, graduated from Oakhurst High School and attended North Carolina State College.

Al was owner and operator of Al Browne's Service Station and Fuel Oil Company for 42 years. His customers and employees were also his close friends. Al lived believing each day was the best day of his life.

In 1951, Al and Leroy Morrison formed the Myers Park Civitan Club which remains active today. Al believed in supporting youth athletics and was one of the first sponsors of a team in the present Trinity Little League Association. He was also a past President of the North Carolina Service Station Association, a member of the Good Fellows Club, the Navejo Club and Elder Emeritus of Amity Presbyterian Church.

Al's greatest gift was the manner in which he gave to others quietly. Most of his generosity will never to known; however, somewhere there are numbers of seminary and college students whose tuition was paid quietly; prisoners who were non readers tutored by Al, now read; homes now owned because of a quiet loan. One whose life he touched sums up Al's spirit. "He truly taught me what it meant to be generous, and now everytime I try to be generous to others I think of Al and what he taught me."

Surviving Al are his children, Merrie Jane Pierce and Thomas Alfred Browne, Jr. and his wife, Kathleen; two grand children, Will Pierce and J.G. Bailey and her husband, Fred; one great granddaughter, Britt Lowe; two sisters, Betty Purnell and Brownie Swensen; one brother, Clarence Brown; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Browne.

The service of celebration in honor of Al's life will be held at 10:30 am, Thursday, July 13, 2000 at Amity Presbyterian Church with The Reverend Dr. Carter Lofton officiating. Internment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Jane Browne Parlor at the church one hour prior to the service.

Active pallbearers are David Brown, Jamie Boyer, Jim Boyer, Bill Gilliam, Bob Nowlin, Steve Pressley, Michael Simpson and James Stancil. Honorary pallbearers are former employees of Al Browne's Service.

The family invites friends to be with them Wednesday evening at Al's Strawberry Lane home.

Memorials to honor Al's life may be made to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.

Harry and Bryant Company is serving his family.
