David married first Lucinda Ann Smith (1810-1848) d/o Levi Smith and Terzah Almeda. David and Lucinda had children: Earl Lindley Shepard (1845-1916) , Mary Jane Shepard-Otis (1831-1860), Ann Eliza Shepard-Otis (1837-1883), E Louise Shepard-Cooke, Dwight Shepard (1833-1922), Elise Shepard, and Henry C Shepard (1830-1846). In 1849, David Lindley Shepard married 2nd Olive Brockway (1817-1814). David and Olive had children: Frank Otis Shepard, Clyde Lindley Shepard, and Austin Hamilton Shepard .
According to a letter from Lucile Shepard, DeReign to Alice Shepard Jeffrey (1982) "he began his life as a farmer and was a farmer in the latter part of his life. "But in his youth he went to Cleveland, Ohio, interested in the booming fur trade."
