MADISON - Marvin M. Truman, age 79, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, after a long and courageous battle with leukemia.

Marvin was extremely proud of his lifelong trade and service to his country in the U.S. Navy. A tailor for nearly 60 years, he came aboard the USS Kasaan Bay soon after his 18th birthday and quickly became his ship's tailor during World War II. In 1948, after being discharged at Great Lakes Naval Base, he opened his first commercial tailor shop on State Street in Madison, above the Capitol Tog shop. His shop remained on State Street, in various locations, for 26 years, then moved to his home at 414 S. Few St. for another 17 years.

In the early 1990s, Marvin relocated to Naples, Fla., for so-called retirement. Retirement didn't suit him so he opened his next tailor shop in downtown Naples and worked for another nine years. In 2001, Marvin returned to Wisconsin to live out the remainder of his days with his beloved son, Christopher.

After returning, he still refused to retire. Marvin worked out of the shop at his home doing alterations for friends and the community, as well as working nearly full-time at various local men's suit shops such as S&K Menswear and Jos. A. Banks. Marvin was a master-tailor, a disappearing art these days.

He will always be remembered for his dedication, strong work ethic and expertise at his craft. Marvin won several Best of Madison awards for his trade during the 1980s and received recognition from the University of Wisconsin NROTC unit for "40 Years of Excellent Workmanship and Faithful Service" in March 1989.

He is survived by his son, Christopher Truman of Cambridge; his long-time friend, business partner and former wife, Lottie Truman of Madison; stepsons, Parker Gileof Naples, Fla., Steve Gile of Madison, and Rollie Brown of Avoca; grandson, Philip Gile of Williamsburg, Ill.; sister, June Svitter of Plymouth; and nephews Corliss Goddake of Sun Prairie, and Robert Goddake of Madison. He is also survived by children from a previous marriage, Dennis, Joel, Markley, Susan and Anthony.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys and Milburn Turnipseed; his sister, Anita Morton; and stepson, Gregory Gile.

Marvin chose to be cremated and his family will hold a memorial service at VFW POST 1318, 133 E. Lakeside St., Madison, on Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to 1818 Aberg Avenue, Madison, WI 53704, in care of Christopher Truman.
