Note: all death notices and her death certificate state "Helen"; her tombstone is engraved "Ellen". Her name was listed as Ellen on the 1910 and 1920 census.

Mrs. Helen A. Fay, 80, wife of Herbert Wells Fay, custodian at Lincoln's tomb, died at 9:30 a.m. yesterday at the Fay home in Lincoln lodge, adjacent to the tomb. Her husband, one of the nation's outstanding authorities on Abraham Lincoln, is 85 years old today. Mrs. Fay had been in ill health for several months and had been under the care of a physician. Her death, however, came as a shock to friends, many of whom did not know of the seriousness of her illness.

Mrs. Fay, the former Helen Augusta Sebree, was born Dec. 21, 1863, in Squaw Grove township, DeKalb county, now the village, Hinckley. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Marsh Sebree and her grandfather, William Sebree, was one of the first settlers of DeKalb county.

She was married to Mr. Fay Sept. 24, 1884, at Hinckley. She and her husband observed their 59th wedding anniversary last fall. Mr. and Frs. Fay first resided in Hinckley, where Mr. Fay published a newspaper. They moved to DeKalb, where for 33 years Mr. Fay was owner and publisher of a newspaper before coming to Springfield 23 years ago to become custodian at Lincoln's tomb. Mrs. Fay moved to Springfield two years later.

Mrs. Fay was active in various civic organizations of the city and was a member of the Springfield Woman's club, the Y.W.C.A., the Civic Garden club, Ceramics and Crafts club, Chatterbox Luncheon club and the Nature league.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Fay is survived by one son, Earl Owen Fay, DeKalb. IL State Journal, Springfield, IL 2-28-1944
