Additional notes on John Coe. At the age of 40, John, living in Greencastle, Iowa, enlisted in Company D, Iowa 40th Infantry Regiment on 27 August 1862 and died on 3 April 1863 of "typho. mal. fever" at G. H. Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky. His place of burial is unknown. Sarah E. filed for her widow pension on 26 April 1863 (application # 19.449) and John Myers a minor filed on 28 Feb 1865 (application # 84.577). Children: Milton's middle name was Brooks. He married first Mary Dempsey (1850-7 Aug 1877), 1 September 1872 and second Lydia A. Dempsey on 24 December 1877. Their second child Elizabeth married Elisha D. West on 3 May 1868.

3RD MARRIAGE: Ancestry.com. - 5 April 1893, Des Moines, Polk, County, Iowa. Zadok Kilborn French, born 24 June 1835, in Ontario, Canada, the son of Edward Jewett French and Phebe Hawley Kilborn.

Additional information on Zadok French. His first wife was Mary Thompson Orr (born 1837 and died 12 July 1892). Children of this union was Mary Francis (Mamie), born 1865, married O. R. Ervin; Harriet E. (Hattie), born 1875 and died 1917, married Charles Hannold; and Florence Anna (Flossie), (1879-1962), married an Erwin.

From the COLFAX CLIPPER - Saturday, 20 February 1904, "Mr. & Mrs. Z.K. French have returned from Oklahoma and are again guests of the lady's daughter, Mrs. T.G. Young at Valley Junction. The cause of their early return was Mrs. F's poor health which the humidity of the climate seemed to aggravate. Mr. French was here Thursday looking after business matters and greeting old friends of whom he has a host in his old home."

BIRTH-PARENTAGE-SPOUSES-ISSUE-DEATH-BURIAL: (The following clipping was found in the Colfax Library - undated- ) Obituary of Mrs. Z. K. French - "Sarah E. Barker was born on the 16th day of August, 1835, and 13 years later came with her parents to Iowa. In 1851, she was united in marriage with John Coe, who in 1863 enlisted in the Union Army and died in the south. The fruits of this union were three children, one of whom, Milton B., is living in Oklahoma, and another named (Elizabeth) West near Boone in this state. In 1865, she was again married to Wm. Foy, who died in this place in 1883 leaving her with their two children, Samuel E., of Valley Junction, and Ella Foy-Young deceased. In 1895 she was again married to Z. K. (Zadoc K.) French, who survives her. She was converted when 16 years of age, and has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for 61 years. Her death took place on May 14, 1912, at the home of her sister, Mrs. John Sperling, in Valeria. Her fatal illness was a lingering disease. She leaves, besides those mentioned, two sisters, a brother, and 19 grandchildren. The obsequies were on Thursday from the Valeria M.E church, Rev. Williams of Mingo preaching the sermon, and the interment was at McKeever cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Boyd, Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Williams and family, Mrs. M. E. Richey, of Colfax; Mrs. McHose and Mrs. Whitney, both of Maxwell her son, Samuel Foy, and three grandchildren (Young's) from Valley Junction, were the only out-of-town relatives in attendance at the funeral." "Ransom Rowe I - The name Ramsom Rowe was heard many times around the Greencastle area. The first Ransom Rowe did not come to Iowa, but at least three of his children settled near here. Ransom Rowe was the father of eight children. They were: William, Elisha, Rufus, Ann, Harriett, Marinda, Ransom II, and Catherine. Ann Rowe was born November 17, 1806, in Madison County, New York. She was married in 1825 in New York to Richard Barker. There were only five settlers in this area when he came here. Richard was born September 17, 1802, in Pennsylvania, but went to Washington County, New York, in 1812. He and Ann moved to Ohio and then to Indiana before they settled in Poweshiek Township in 1849. Their children were: Charles, Elizabeth, Mary, William, Mariah, Ann Elida, Rebecca Jane, Syble, James T., and Rachel. Harriett Rowe was married in New York to Philander Mott. They had a son, Merritt, and lived in Anamosa, Iowa. Marinda Rowe married a Mr. Munger. Ransom Rowe II married Alzina Bailey, the daughter of John Bailey. His family will be found elsewhere. Catherine Rowe married Benjamin Burton Bailey, son of James Bailey, Sr. Their family will be found elsewhere. Richard Barker died December 12, 1887, and Ann (Rowe) Barker died January 22, 1889.
