Auto Race Car Driver. Born in Oakford, Illinois, he began his racing career as a mechanic and the first car he built with his father won the Indianapolis 500 in 1930. Going on to be a top contending driver, he competed in five Indianapolis 500 races in (1937, 39, 40) and in 1941, was co-winner of the Indianapolis 500, driving the first 72 laps of the race sharing the win with Mauri Rose who completed the race in the lead. After serving in the US Navy during World War II, he returned sprint car racing as a mechanic and a driver until he died at age 68 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
