GASTONIA - Jeff Lester Turner, 82, died Feb. 19, 2009, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Capto, Ky., son of the late Jeff Lester and Rose Manis Turner.

Mr. Turner was a veteran of the U. S. Marines and the U. S. Army. While in the Marines, he was stationed at Parris Island and Camp Lejeune and served in the South Pacific during WWII. He then joined the U. S. Army where he was stationed in Germany and served 2 tours of duty in Korea during the Korean War and returned to Korea in 1960. He was stationed at Fort Jackson where he was acting Sergeant Major and retired from the U. S. Army as 1st Sergeant. After his retirement from the U.S. Army, Mr. Turner worked for Western Auto Company and retired as Wholesale Credit Manager. He is a member of Brookleigh Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Roxie Irene Slate Turner; three sons, Vega Ron Turner, Neil Armstrong Turner both of Gastonia and Jeff Lester Turner III and wife Cheryl of Clover; three daughters, Roxanne Turner York and husband Robert of Clemson, Valarie Turner Beam and husband William, Amy Turner Reeves and husband Tommy, both of Gastonia; one brother, Richard Turner of Greensboro; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Carothers Funeral Home, Gastonia. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at The Colonial Chapel of Carothers Funeral Home, Gastonia with the Revs. Dennis Pruitt and Walter Prescott officiating. Entombment will be in Mausoleum B with full military rites by the U.S. Army at Gaston Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Keith Reeves, Lawrence Reeves, William Lawrence Beam III, William Lawrence Beam, Jr., Tommy Reeves and Robert York.

Mr. Turner was preceded in death by parents; two brothers, Eugene Turner and James Turner; two sisters, Mable Dodson and Pauline Barnes.

The family requests that memorials be made to Brookleigh Baptist Church Building Fund, 700 Robinson Road, Gastonia, N. C. 28056 or Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, New York 10001
