INTERMENT FOLLOWED IN NEW SALEM CEMETERY IN GAIRARD, LA UNDER THE DIRECTION OF BROWN-HOLLEY FUNERAL HOME IN RAYVILLE.

DOROTHY GARLAND WAS BORN FEBRUARY 1, 1919 AT HER HOME NEAR GIRARD, LOUISIANA. SHE PASSED AWAY ON SATURDAY, JULY 15, 2006 IN RAYVILLE, LOUISIANA.

DOROTHY IS SURVIVED BY SISTERS JACKIE ROBINSON, OF START, LA AND BETTY WEAVER AND HUSBAND MARVIN, OF BASTROP, LA, FLOYE MCENERY OF RAYVILLE; SPECIAL NIECE, CLAUDIA HENDRIX AND HUSBAND, CHARLES OF RAYVILLE, LA; AND A HOST OF NIECES AND NEPHEWS; SPECIAL CARE GIVERS, LILLIE NOBLES OF EPPS, LA AND ANN SMITH OF RAYVILLE, LA.

MRS GARLAND WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HER PARENTS, ARTHUR SPENCER AND CLAUDIA LUCAS SPENCER; HUSBAND, ARNOLD "TOT" GARLAND; BROTHERS, A J SPENCER AND DOUGLAS SPENCER AND SISTER, CLARA RUSK.

DOROTHY MARRIED THE LOVE OF HER LIFE, ARNOLD GARLAND ON SEPTEMBER 15, 1935. THEY WERE DEVOTED TO EACH OTHER THEIR ENTIRE MARRIED LIVES. THEY CALLED EACH OTHER PET NAMES SUCH AS "T-HEART" AND "MAMA-BUG". THEY ALWAYS REFERRED TO EACH OTHER AS "MY TOOTSIE" AND "MY TOT" WHEN TALKING TO OTHER PEOPLE. WHENEVER THEY WERE GETTING READY TO GO SOMEWHERE, TOOTSIE WOULD ASK "READY T-HEART?" AND TOT WOULD ANSWER, "REDDY'S CALF." TO ANYONE WHO EVER MET THEM THEY ALWAYS ACTED LIKE NEWLYWEDS.

DOROTHY "TOOTSIE" AND HER HUSBAND, "TOT" MOVED TO SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA IN 1951. TOOTSIE WORKED AT A HOSPITAL DURING THE DAY AND WENT TO SCHOOL AT NIGHT UNTIL SHE RECEIVED HER HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA. TOOTSIE THEN WENT TO WORK AT FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF SAN DIEGO. THEY RETIRED AND MOVED BACK HOME TO GIRARD IN 1973.

DOROTHY WAS VERY ATHLETIC. SHE LOVED BASKETBALL, SOFTBALL, RIDING HORSES, HUNTING AND WORKING IN HER YARD. SHE CANNED VEGETABLES AND PUT UP PRESERVES. TOOTSIE AND TOT EVEN DUG SOME OF THE LARGE DRAINAGE DITCHES ON THEIR LAND BY HAND WITH ONLY SHOVELS. HER YARD WAS HER PRIDE AND JOY. SHE SPENT HOURS MOST EVERY DAY RAKING LEAVES AND TIDYING UP HER YARD.

SHE WAS A VERY STRONG PERSON; SHE BATTLED DIFFERENT CANCERS AND A BROKEN BACK. WITH EACH BATTLE, SHE NEVER GAVE UP, SHE NEVER SLOWED DOWN.

IN 2005, HER DOCTORS DECIDED THAT HER HEALTH DEMANDED THAT SHE BE PUT INTO A NURSING HOME. EVEN WITH ALZHEIMERS, SHE KEPT BUSY. SOON AFTER MOVING INTO COLONIAL MANOR, SHE TOLD CLAUDIA THAT SHE HAD BEEN THINKING ABOUT GOING BACK TO WORK. SHE BEGAN HELPING OTHERS. SHE FOLLOWED THE NURSES AND AIDES TO "HELP THEM". SHE MADE BEDS AND STRAIGHTENED ROOMS, SHE ALSO "SAT" WITH BED RIDDEN PATIENTS. SHE WOULD HOLD THEIR HANDS AND TALK TO THEM. ONE LADY IN COLONIAL MANOR ONCE SAID THAT THEY HAD THE PRETTIEST AND NEATEST HALL SINCE MS. DOROTHY HAD COME TO LIVE THERE.

WHILE IN CALIFORNIA, TOOTSIE AND TOT BECAME MEMBERS OF THE BAPTIST CHURCH WHERE TOOTSIE WAS CHURCH SECRETARY. THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS CAN TAKE COMFORT THAT TOOTSIE AND TOT ARE IN HEAVEN—TOGETHER, ONCE AGAIN.

PALLBEARERS WERE CHARLES HENDRIX, STEPHEN WEAVER, CHRISTOPHER PRICE AND BRADLEY ALLEN.
