Parents were missionaries to Tibet and C.Ruth grew up in Tibet, although she spent a year in the United States visiting relatives during the several furloughs. In 1929, she returned to Los Angeles with her parents when her father's illness worsened and required medical treatment. She married widower Raymond A. Peterson, missionary.
