OBITUARY - Lawrence Duchaine
Sloan, Iowa - Lawrence "Frenchy" Duchaine, 89, of Sloan died Thursday, Jan 19, 1995, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa, following a brief illness. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix with Mr. Duchaine's son, the Rev. Mark Duchaine officiating, along with the Rev. Bruce Lawler and the Rev. Thomas Nash. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Salix. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. at the church. Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born June 27, 1905, in Sloan, the son of Louis and Malvina (Duhaime) Duchaine. After moving to Salix, Iowa, he attended St. Joseph school through sixth grade, moving back to Sloan to complete his education at Sloan Community School, graduating in 1924. He married Muriel Grotewald in Jackson, Minn. on May 20, 1935. The couple made their home in Sloan. He was employed at Sloan Mercantile Co. for 20 years. In 1946 he took over the commercial printing operation of his father, renaming it the Diamond Printing Co. where he worked until his retirement in 1991. Mr. Duchaine was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Church in Salix, where he served as a Eucharistic minister and usher. He was active in commercial and civic affairs, and was an original member of the Sloan Commercial Club and twice served as Sloan City Clerk. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Judy and her husband, Gerald Bradley of Lake Park, Iowa and Susan McMullen of Plains, Pa.;two sons, Louis and his wife, Norma of New York City, and the Rev. Mark Duchaine of Holstein, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mafalda Duchaine of Satellite Beach, Fla,; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. he was preceded in death by a son, lawrence Jr.; seven sisters and two brothers.Laurence Duchaine
