Although never a participant in the Indianapolis 500, Schwitzer won the first racing event at the Speedway in 1909. In his honor, the Louis Schwitzer Award for innovation and engineering excellence is given annually to an individual in recognition of a technical accomplishment with a car entered in that year's Indianapolis 500 Classic. Schwitzer, after retiring from driving, became a dynamic automotive pioneer. Among other things, he is a benefactor of the Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory High School in Indianapolis, where the gymnasium is named for him and where a commemorative plaque is displayed.
