She was born Nov. 22, 1936, in Jamestown, a daughter of the late John W. and Evelyn Hanson Carlson, and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1954.
A homemaker and caregiver always, Elaine was actively involved outside the home as well. In addition to part time work at the former Ruslink Plaza Drugs and General Hospital Pharmacy, she had served as pianist and organist at Brooklyn Heights United Methodist Church, Camp Street United Methodist Church and for many years as a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, where she was also involved in the Sunday school. More recently, she had regularly volunteered at WCA Hospital.
Elaine was a member of Zion Covenant Church, where she was active in the visitation committee and choir. She also belonged to the American Scandinavian Heritage Foundation, the Mozart Club and the Mozart Club Chorus.
Along with music, her greatest joys were her family, travel, church and friends.
Surviving is her husband, P. Richard ''Dick'' Cowan, whom she married Jan. 2, 1955; a son, Richard S. (Lauren) Cowan and granddaughter, Katy Cowan of Norcross, Ga.; and a sister, Jane Cowan of Vestal, N.Y.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Stephanie R. Cowan who died in 1964 and a son, Steven P. Cowan who died in 1972.
