James Gamble taught at S.S. #6 Hawkesbury Township for the year ending 31 December 1842, receiving a salary of 22 pounds, 4 shillings, 53/4 pence from the School Fund and 23/14/5 1/2 from the School tax. Later, as the Local Superintendent of Education for the Township of East Hawkesbury, he signed annual reports to the Secretary of Education from 1850 to 1866. James Gamble also served as Justice of the Peace, and worked a farm.

On Christmas morning, 1890, James Gamble wrote:

To you and all my friends:
This is my 80th Christmas. Most likely my last. I am patiently waiting God's time. I feel his presence, oh!
Let us one and all fight the good fight of faith and works [illegible] upon Eternal life,
May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father and the Fellowship and [illegible] of the Holy Spirit rest and remain with you all forevermore. Amen
