John was born in Caryle, Illinois in 1860. His family later moved to St. Joseph, Tennessee. John married Theresia Busch around 1885. While living in Tennessee three children were born. The family moved to Muenster in 1890 and attended the first mass in the new community. Ten more children were born in Muenster. They acquired three farms and farmed them until John was tragically hit by a car while walking along the highway. He died from his injuries.
He is survived by his wife, daughters, Mary Hess, Catherine Walterscheid, Anna Stoffels, Theresa Kathman of Muenster, and Sr. Anselma (Emma) of Jonesboro, Arkansas; and sons, John, Joseph, William, Al, Bernard, Frank and Charlie of Muenster. He was preceded in death by a son Henry in 1895.
