Maurice W. "Tuck" Heffner, 95, of Mason, formerly of Lafayette, died at 4:25 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008, at Mason Christian Village.

He was born Sept. 14, 1912, in Jackson Township to Walter and Martha Harshe Heffner, who preceded him in death. On Dec. 31, 1947, he married Bessie L. Kegg, who died April 25, 1989.

Mr. Heffner had been owner and operator of Heffner Standard Oil Service Station, Lima, and from 1964 to 1978, he owned and operated the Union 76 Station, Lafayette. He was also caretaker of the Lafayette Cemetery, for 15 years. He was a member of Lafayette Congregational Christian Church. He had served on the Allen East school board and as president of the Lafayette park board and the Lima Gasoline Association. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9381, Ada. He was a 1930 graduate of Lafayette-Jackson High School, where he was still active in class reunions and was master of ceremonies at the 50th reunion. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving at the Battle of the Bulge in Normandy, France.

Survivors include two sons, Donald W. (Jill) Heffner, of Mason, and James A. (Kim) Heffner, of Delaware, Ohio; a daughter, Janet S. Harvey, of Columbus; six grandchildren, Anna (Ryan) Brink, Alicia (Dan) Davis, Sarah Heffner, Bethany Heffner, Holli Heffner and Zachary Heffner; and three great-grandchildren, Isabella Brink, Evie Davis and Kale Davis.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Heffner; and two sisters, Melva Ruff and Lenna Hawk.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Lewis Eastside Chapel. The Rev. Dick Sedgewick will officiate. Burial will be in Lafayette Cemetery, Lafayette, with military rites by VFW Post 9381.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
