Donald F. Davenport of Kennett Square

He was the husband of Evelyn Myers Davenport, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage.
Born in Mendenhall, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Bird Davenport.
He was the original owner of the Birch Inn in Kennett Square, operating the business from 1949 to 1973.
He was a member of the Kennett Area Senior Center, the Kennett Fire Company No. 1 and the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association; was a life member of the Italian American Club; and was past president of the Chester County Tavern Association.
Donnie was an all-star baseball player during and after high school, and also played semi-pro ball throughout the area. He was an inductee and founder of the Old Timers Baseball Hall of Fame.
He enjoyed golfing and was an avid sports fan, especially of the Philadelphia sports teams. In his earlier years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, farming, and sailing his boat on the Chesapeake Bay.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Donald C. Davenport and his wife, Susan, of Towson, Md.; one daughter, Joanne Eldreth and her husband, Bart, of Kennett Square; one brother, Charles W. Davenport of Wilmington, Del.; three grandchildren, Robert Anderson and his wife, Laura, of Kennett Square, Steven Davenport and his wife, Jesee, of Roswell, Ga., and Suzanne Davenport of Towson, Md.; and two great-grandchildren, William C. Davenport and Lillie Davenport, both of Roswell, Ga.
Family and friends are invited to attend Donnie's life celebration from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, October 20, and also from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 21, at the Kuzo & Gofus Funeral Home Ltd., "A Life Celebration Home," State and Meredith Streets, Kennett Square.
His funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Union Hill Cemetery. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Longwood Fire Company, 1001 E. Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square, PA 19348.
