United States Army General. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second-highest award for bravery. Raised in Hollywood, Menetrey joined the Army in 1953 after graduation from Hollywood High School, and the University of California. After completing Infantry Basic and Airborne Ranger training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he held four commands at the company level, and served as a nuclear weapons evaluation officer. Promoted to Major, he attended Command and General Staff College, earned a master's degree at Georgetown University, then graduated from the Armed Forces Staff College. He was sent to Viet Nam as a Lieutenant colonel, serving as deputy chief of staff of the First Cavalry Division, later commanding the Second Battalion, 28th. Infantry. Returning to America, he attended the National War College, and assisted in the transition to an all-volunteer Army. Menetrey was selected for general officer promotion while serving at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and sent to the Second Infantry Division in Korea. He was later to command the Combined Field Army, in Korea, and the Fifth Army, in Texas. Receiving his fourth star in 1987, his final assignment was the United Nations Command, giving him charge of all military forces in South Korea. After retirement in 1990, he worked as a consultant. The General's awards include the Distinguished Service Cross, the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, two Legions of Merit, two Silver Stars, and three Bronze Stars.
