James was born in Northfleet to Ellen Mary Bardoe and was brought up by his grandparents George and Ellen Bardoe. Ellen was their eldest child but their youngest surviving son, Ernest Stanley Bardoe, was just a year younger than James
The extended family lived in the same area of Northfleet at Salem Place, Tooley Street and Buckingham Road. James was living at 6 Tooley Street with his grand parents in 1939. On the 21 April 1939 his grand mother Rose and her younger daughter Rose were waiting at the bus stop at the Hill, Northfleet when a lorry passed them and the large iron rotor wheel that it was carrying broke loose and crushed them both. The grandmother was killed almost instantly but the her daughter was taken to Gravesend Hospital where she later died on the 27 April
After leaving school James worked at White's cement works in Swanscombe before joining the Army in July 1940
He was killed 'due to enemy action' at Gosport on 18th April 1941 aged 25 years
His body was returned to the family and he was buried in Northfleet Cemetery on Saturday 26 April 1941
