"Christ Busch Passes On After Many Years As Oldest Local Business Man"
Said to be one of first early merchants of Hinsdale; hold funeral Wednesday. One of Hinsdale's first resident merchants, said to have been the village's oldest business man, Christopher Busch, died Sunday morning at the home of his son, Walter, 440 South Thurlow street. The old time citizen, a familiar figure as the elderly proprietor of the men's furnishing store across the street from the depot, had been bedfast since September, following two major operations. His death was caused by the inevitable decline due to advanced age.
Christopher (Christ) Busch was born December 19, 1858, in Rhein Plaz, Bayerin, Germany. He came to this country and worked as a baker in Chicago when he was 18 years old. Later he moved to Hinsdale and in 1885 was married to Amalia Hintz of Downers Grove township. There were eight children born to the couple.
Together, Mr. and Mrs. Busch purchased as business and residential quarters the building at 16 east Hinsdale avenue, where they conducted an ice cream and soft drink "parlor". Thereafter enlarging the stock to include groceries and some general merchandise. In later years the shop was converted into a men's clothing store superintended alone by the aging man, whose wife passed away in December 1907, and whose children had grown and married. Mr. Busch waited on his old customers daily until last summer when he was forced to retire because of ill health.
Mr. Busch was a Charter member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran church and was one of it's first elders.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the Walter Busch home and Zion Lutheran church. The services was read by the Rev. A. Werfelmann. Burial was in Zion Lutheran cemetery.
Mr. Busch is survived by his children, Mrs. Bertha Mesenbrink of Maywood, Ill.; Mrs. Mary Jeschke of Melrose Park, Ill.; Mrs. Louise Wolf, Mrs. Katherine Bode, Mrs. Henrietta Hayden and Walter of Hinsdale; Louise of Downers Grove, Ill., and Ernest of St. Louis, Mo. Also sixteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren and a half-sister, Mrs. William Wentz of Congress Park, Ill.
