James was the son of Peter and Anna Wolfe Wakefield. He was married Millie Gertrude Hayzlett. He died of Leukemia.

Funeral services for prominent farmer, 52, tomorrow at the Ulmer home
James merrill Wakefield, 52, prominent farmer and stockman who lived on a farm 4 miles northwest of Carthage, died at 10:00 o'clock last night in Stone Memorial hospital. He suffered from a rare blood disease diagnosed as leukemia. Several days ago he was moved to the hospital.
Mr Wakefield's father, Peter Wakefield, came to Jasper county from Ohio just after the civil war and settled on the present Wakefield farm northwest of Carthage, where James M Wakefield was born September 20, 1886. He had lived on the home place since the death of his father in 1932. He was married September 3, 1913 to Miss Mildred Hayzlett. Surviving Mr Wakefield are his wife; two daughters, Misses Nellie Wakefield, a teacher in the Mark Twain school, and Mrs Luella Amsden of Route 2 and a brother, C E Wakefield of Commerce, Oklahoma, WW Wakefield and Wesley Wakefield, 1027 South McGregor street, are cousins of James Wakefield.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Ulmer funeral home with the Rev J M Patton of Alba in charge. Burial will be in Park Cemetery.
Mr Wakefield was a member of the Union Methodist church, west of Carthage. In recent years he had attended the Fariview Friends church and served as superintendent of the Sunday school there.
