Homer K. Peterson
Homer K. Peterson, known to one and all as Poor Old Homer, died at his home Sunday, June 14, 1998.
Homer is remembered as a generous husband, father and friend. He was an eloquent curser, an avid gin rummy player and golfer.
He was born on February 28, 1920, in Salt Lake City to Samuel Ernest and Alice Rogers Peterson.
He graduated from South High School in 1937 because, he claims, they needed the seat. He briefly served in the U.S. Army in 1942. Homer married Lura Faye Barkdull on June 12, 1941.
He worked as a salesman for the White King Soap Company, but spent most of his career at KALL radio and the Intermountain Network. He retired from KALL in 1990. Homer was instrumental in establishing cable television in the Intermountain West, securing franchises for Telecommunications Incorporated throughout the area.
Among his many accomplishments, Homer served as president of the Ambassador Athletic Club, was named Boss of the Year by the Jaycees, and was president of the Salt Lake City Police Honorary Colonels. He was also presented with a service to journalism award by the University of Utah Department of Communications.
Homer is survived by his wife of 57 years and two days. He is the proud father of four children: Bill (Judy) Peterson of Farmington, Peggy (Larry) Osoro of Sandy, Jim (Kari) Peterson of South Bend, Ind., and Mark (Rita) Peterson of Ogden. He took great joy in his 15 grandchildren and 63/4 great-grandchildren. Homer is also survived by his two sisters, Virginia Bjornn and Donna Nickerson, both Salt Lake City.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Melvin Peterson.
Homer was a member of LDS Church, and was a friend of many churches in the area.
Viewings are scheduled Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 12 noon at the Murray City Cemetery, 5490 South Vine St.
Be happy for Homer, he died the way he wanted to. Homer always hated money being spent on flowers for funerals. In accordance with his wishes, the family suggests in lieu of flowers, you send a donation to your favorite charity.
