HARTER.--William N. Harter, a teacher at Kearney High School and Mesa College for more than 35 years, died Sunday in the Veterans Administration Hospital. He was 78 and a resident of La Jolla.
Mr. Harter was born in Greenville, Pa., where he earned his degree at Thiel College in 1933. He was honored for his academic and athletic abilities by being voted into the college's Hall of Fame in 1986. He joined the Army as a private at the beginning of World War II and rose to the rank of Major. He was in charge of preliminary officer candidate training at Camp Callan, where the Torrey Pines Golf Course is now located. Mr. Harter received a commendation for this work. He also was an artillery instructor in the United States and in the Philippines. He was discharged in 1946. He became a mathematics instructor at Kearney High School and contacted legislators and businesses to secure awards in recognition of student accomplishments. Mr. Harter organized - and at first paid the expenses - for students to enter mathematics competitions at Occidental College. Later, the competitions became part of the school program. He was one of the first mathematics instructors at Mesa College when it opened in 1964. His health prevented him from teaching this semester. He was one of the oldest contract faculty members in the district, associates said. Mr. Harter was a longtime member of Christ Lutheran Church of Pacific Beach and for 2O years had been organist for the church's senior group, "Young At Heart."
Survivors include his wife, Margaret L. Harter, a brother and sister, the Rev. Nathan F. Harter of Anderson, Indiana, and Elizabeth R. Spence of Greenville, Pa.
Services will be at 1O a.m. tomorrow in Christ Lutheran Church. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. today in Pacific Beach Mortuary. Entombment will be in El Camino Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be sent to William N. Harter Memorial Scholarship Fund, Care of Associated Student Body, Mesa College, 725O Mesa College Drive, San Diego 92111.
