1st Lt David W Cobb, Service # O-703706 served as a navigator with the 877th Squadron, 499th Bomb Group, 73 Bomb Wing, 20th Air Force. Shot down aboard B-29, 44-69655 over Osaka, was taken as a POW then executed by the Japs 15 August 1945.

A full tour of duty within 21st Bomber Command was the completion of 35 combat missions over the Empire of Japan. 1st Lt Cobb and his crew were nearing competition of their tour on their 31st mission 26 June 1945 when it became their final mission.

On 26 June 1945; Mission No. 224. Target: Osaka Army Arsenal, Target Number 90.25-382 73rd Bomb Wing. During this mission only one aircraft was lost. B-29 serial number 44-69655, which belonged to the Capt. James F Newell crew, including 1st Lt Cobb. This plane was not seen enroute or in the target assembly area due to poor weather conditions, and was last heard from at 0950K in the target assembly area. Cause of loss was unknown according to Missing Air Crew Report No. 14911. The crew was initially declared MIA and later classified as KIA.

The ultimate fate of this crew was learned after the war. The aircraft was apparently shot down, by Japanese fighters, according to one source, after attacking Osaka Arsenal and crashed near Miyaka Village (absorbed into Hidakagawa Town in 2005) in Hidaka County, Wakayama Prefecture, about 60 miles south of the target. Two crew members were KIA, the nine others became POW later executed by the Japanese in the final days of the war. Reliable sources state that S/Sgt Robert L Pellicot (Tail Gunner) and 1st Lt. Louis W Lehnen (Flight Engineer) were executed on/about 5 August 1945 at the Jonan rifle range in Osaka City.
