Publisher/owner of the first Kansas Newspaper, Sept. 15, 1854 (108 days after the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska act, which organized this territory) the "Kansas Weekly Herald" from Leavenworth, KS under the shade of an old oak tree! The Adams family had just moved to Kansas in Aug. of 1854 and were using tents to live in. "There was not a house within thirty miles, not so much as a cow path for a street, not a field of plowed land, near or far in all Kansas". The building built for the newpaper was the first building in town. Info from "First Newspapers in Kansas Counties 1854-1864 by G Raymond Gaeddert, February 1941 Vol 10 no 1, pages 3-33.

In 1856 William H Adams testified before Congress regarding the "Report of the Special Committee Appointed to Investigate the "Troubles in Kansas", concerning the election of 30 March 1855".

NOTE FROM CONTRIBUTOR:
Contrary to many sources, the Kansas Weekly Herald was not the first newspaper in Kansas. But it was the first one in English. The Shawnee Sun was about fifty years earlier.
