Arlene Ruth (Janssen) Block (1920 - 1990)
Arlene Ruth Block, the daughter of Henry and Emma Bauer Janssen, was born Aug. 28, 1920 in Denison, Iowa and died Sept. 28, 1990 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha, Neb., at the age of 70.

Arlene grew up on the family farm in Washington Township near Buck Grove where she spent the formative years of her life and helped on the family farm. She received her education in a rural school near her home.

Feb. 3, 1939, Arlene was united in marriage to Paul Block at St. John's Lutheran Church in Buck Grove, by Pastor E.E. Greene. They made their home on a farm south of Denison and were blessed with the birth of three children. After Paul's death, she remained on the farm until 1985 when she moved to Denison.

Arlene was baptized on Oct. 3, 1920, and confirmed Jan. 15, 1936, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Zion's Ladies Aid Society and the Crawford County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Her strength and character were evidenced by her devotion to her Lord and the volunteer work she did at the Eventide Nursing Home.

Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, who died on April 18, 1981; her parents; and one brother, Vernon Janssen.

Survivors include her children: Irma Plagmann and her husband, Orrin of Harlan, Pauline Meeves and her husband, Byron of Denison, and Linda Werkmeister and her husband, Kenneth of Sac City; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild; a sister, Vera Stover and her husband, Harry of Denison; two sisters-in-law, Viola Janssen and Marion Block, both of Denison.

Funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Pastor Kurt Kaiser and Pastor Philip Bloch officiated at the services with interment in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mrs. Karen Kahl was organist and Henry Henningsen soloist. The solo selections were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art." The congregational hymn was "Rock Of Ages." Serving as pallbearers were George Janssen, Curtis Janssen, Virtus Petersen, Kevin Stover, LeRoy Stover and Dennis Wellsandt.
