Adam was born in Hesse-Kassel to Henry and Elizabeth Filker. The Filker family immigrated in 1861 and settled in the Amherst area of Ohio. There were three known sons of Henry and Elizabeth: Henry Jr. born 1843; Adam, born 1844; and William, born 1850.
Adam met Mary Stabbal of Amherst, a daughter of Martin Stabbal (1811-1892) and Sophia Beckstine (1819-1904). The Stabbal family also immigrated from Hesse-Kassel, but it is unknown if the Filker and Stabbal families knew each other in Germany.
Adam Filker enlisted in the Civil War at the age of 19. He enlisted in Company F, 128th Infantry Regiment Ohio on 21 Dec 1863. Adam mustered out of Company F, 128th Infantry Regiment Ohio on 13 Jul 1865 at Camp Chase, OH.
