Adam met Mary Stabbal of Amherst, a daughter of Martin Stabbal (1811-1892) and Sophia Beckstine (1819-1904). The Stabbal family also immigrated from Hesse-Kassel, but it is unknown if the Filker and Stabbal families knew each other in Germany.
Adam Filker enlisted in the Civil War at the age of 19. He enlisted in Company F, 128th Infantry Regiment Ohio on 21 Dec 1863. Adam mustered out of Company F, 128th Infantry Regiment Ohio on 13 Jul 1865 at Camp Chase, OH.
Adam and Mary married around 1865 and remained in Lorain County. They raised seven children in the Amherst area: George, born 1867; Lucy, born 1870; William, born 1877; Anna E. born 1879; John, born 1881; Frank, born 1886; and Maude, born 1889.
