According to "History of Gibson County, Indiana: Her People, Industries and Institutions", published in 1914, by Gil R. Stormont, Mary Ann was born aboard the ship "Mary Ann" on the voyage between England and the United States. Stormont gives the date of 1914 however, the family monument indicates a birth year of 1916.

"John Hopkins of Cambridge, Mass, 1634 and some of his descendants", by Timothy Hopkins, published in 1932 indicates in a footnote on page 398 that the family sailed on the ship, Mary Ann Orient and that Mary Ann Parrett Hopkins was given the name of the ship. The notation reads as follows,

"She was born while crossing the ocean on the sailing vessel "May Ann Orient," landing two days later at Baltimore. The infant was given the name of the ship."

Mary Ann was the daughter of Rev. Robert Parrett, founder of the Methodist Episcopal church in Evansville, and Martha Mason.

Mary Parrett married John Stuart Hopkins on 9 December 1834.

In 1870 John, Mary and their children Robert, Sarah and Edward were living in Evansville. John was a banker.

In 1880 John was retired and living in Evansville with Mary and their son Edward. Also, living in the household was John's nephew, Robert Bethel, age 25.

A death record that can be found at the City Health Office in Evansville, indicates that Mary Ann Hopkins died on 24 July 1886 in Evansville, at the age of 70. The source of this information is the book, CH-2 on page 126 within the series produced by the Indiana Works Progress Administration.
