Navy veteran Capt. Zeno BRIGGS dies

Inurnment for Capt. Zeno Everett BRIGGS, USN, ret., will be in Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery. Capt. BRIGGS, 95, died Wednesday in a La Jolla convalescent home.

Born in West Point, Neb., he was appointed to the Naval Academy in 1894 and served as a midshipman on the full-rigged sailing ship Monongahela.

Capt. BRIGGS served in the Spanish-American War. In 1918 he helped transport troops between Hoboken, N.J., and Brest, France, and received a letter of commendation.

From 1921 to 1923 he was commander of Submarine Flotilla 3, Asiatic Fleet. After graduating from the U.S. Naval War College he commanded the battleship Texas.

He served as captain of the yard and temporary commandant of Puget Sound Navy Yard until 1933, when he retired. He was recalled in 1941 for World War II.

Capt. BRIGGS received the Spanish American Campaign Medal, Mexican Campaign Medal, World War I Victory Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
A county resident 26 years, he lived at 7910 La Jolla Shores Dr. Surviving are a daughter, Miss Kathleen Amy BRIGGS of La Jolla, a brother and nieces and nephews. No services will be held. La Jolla Mortuary is in charge.
