Clara Margaret was the fifth child of Richard & Emily Caroline (Potts) Umsted of Illinois.

She was first married in Richland County, IL, to Charles Edwin Rolen, who she divorced while carrying his second child in April 1900.

Her children went to live with her parents in Hymera, IN, and she removed to Terre Haute. When her mother became paralyzed, she moved in with Clara's sister, Martha Crawford, where Clara and her son, now 19, were reunited.

She and John Wesley Ballinger were married 25 Sep 1920 in Putnam County, IN, about 40 miles east of Terre Haute where they met.

They lived 2201 N. 15th Street and John W. was a coal miner. She died 14 years after their marriage of stomach cancer and was laid to rest here 20 Feb 1934.
