1950 Obituary Richfield, Utah
Richfield's Oldest Pioneer Dies
Services Tuesday Pay Tribute
to Sarah Peterson

Impressive funeral rites for Mrs. Sarah Johnson Peterson, 83, were conducted Tuesday afternoon in the Richfield LDS first ward with Bishop Ellis Christensen of the Fourth ward officiating. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Neal S. Magleby Mortuary.

Mrs. Peterson died in a Salt Lake hosital Saturday where she had been ill for two weeks. She had spent a week visiting her daughter, Mre. Elithe Sumner when she became ill, and was taken to the hospital.

She was born October 12, 1866 in Brigham City, a daughter of James Nicholia and Elna Johnson. When she was 14 days old, the family left by ox team for Moapa Valley, Arizona [Nevada] where they were called to colonize. They lived there until 1871 when they came to Richfield. She has made her home here since. At the time of her death she had lived in Richfield longer than any other person.

She was postmaster of Richfield for 5 years, resigning in 1896 to marry James Martin Peterson, also one of Richfield's early pioneers. It was not their lot to be happy long as he passed away on their third wedding anniversary. Aunt Sarah as she loved to be called, was active in helping organize the Daughters of Utah Pioneer camps throughout Sevier county. She was also secretary of the Sevier County Red Cross during World War I. Her son-in-law served in that war and her grandson served in World War II.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Elithe P. Sumner; her grandson, Scharf Sumner and three great grandchildren.
She helped to rear 4 nieces, Mrs. W. D. Christensen and Mrs. Mack Palmer of Richfield, Mrs. W. B. Marvin and Mrs. Martin Nelson of California. She is also survived by two half-sisters, Mrs. Sophia Brandley of Alberta, Canada and Mrs. Nellie Cunningham of Long Beach, California.

Bishop Christensen and Dr. L. A. Poulson, speakers at the Services, paid high tribute to her unconquerable spirit, thrift and unassuming generosity. Musical numbers were her two favorite humns, Oh Ye Mountains High and Home Sweet Home, sung by the Fourth ward choir. Prayers were by Ernest Nelson and Rev. Franklin Elser.

Burial was in the Richfield cemetery where Eldon Sumner dedicated the grave.

Pallbearers were E. H. Street, Frank Pace, Jason Beals, John B. McMillan, Frank G Martines and J. Vernon Erickson.
