Ernest was the oldest of nine children born to James Albert and Margaret Elizabeth (Moose) Ritchie. He married Rosa Bell in 1909 and they had five children: Infant Son (twin), Glenn Elmo (twin), Hal Woodrow, Edith Marie and James Francis.
