Robert was the son of Robert Henning Long and Sarah Elizabeth Innskeep of Stephens City VA. As his birth date reveals, he was born during the Civil War. His father served the Confederacy in that war.

In census of 1880, Robert was in South Fork, Hardy County, West Virginia working as a blacksmith apprentice with a M.F. Harwood. It was here, in this general area, he met his future wife. Mary Jane's father, Isaac Lambert, was a saddler.

When a young man of 20 years he married Mary Jane "Mollie" Lambert on 7 November 1883. They transplanted to Monroe County MO and made their home and farmed on purchased land just NW of the village of Granville, Clay township.

Their children were:

2. Carrie Elizabeth Long [1886-1889]
3. Harvey Thomas Long [1888]
4. Robert Pierce Long [1890-1965]

OBITUARY: "After a lingering illness of many weeks, Robert Long, a well-known farmer living NW of Granville, died last Friday of heart failure and a complication of other troubles. He was a patient sufferer. Friends and neighbors came and ministered to him and did all that human hands could do, but the Grim Reaper gained a victory and took with him a good citizen and a man of upright living. He leaves three sons and one daughter. The funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon."
