Arriving at Bassingbourn on 31 December 1943, the ship soldiered on a few weeks
past D-Day. Badly damaged by flak over Toulouse (no.3 engine smoked) on 25 June,
2LT Peter Mikonis successfully flew 800 miles over enemy territory and attempted
to land at Snag Farm in Wincanton when "Old Faithful" shed a wing.
All nine aboard were KIA. Dean McDowell was the Tail Gunner.
