Southport -- Mr. Preston Lawrence Bryant of 211 Caswell Ave., Southport died Sunday at New Hanover Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
Mr. Bryant was born Oct. 22, 1906 in Wilmington. He was retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as captain of the dredge Langfitt with an unlimited pilot's license. He also worked for the N. C. State Highway Commission as captain of the Southport-Fort Fisher ferry. He taught marinology at Southport High School and was active in the Southport Rescue Squad. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and president of the Men's Bible Class.
He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II as a lieutenant commander. He was past Master of Pythagoras Mason Lodge No. 249 AF and AM of Southport and held the title of K.C.C.H. in the Scottish Rites bodies of Freemasonry in Wilmington. He was past patron of Live Oak Chapter No. 179 O.E.S. of Southport and a member of the Sudan Temple of the Shrine at New Bern.
He is survived by his wife, Viola Bryant; one stepson, William G. Scharborough; one stepdaughter Virginia S. Yates and two grandaughters, all of Raleigh, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport with the Rev. Claude Chaffin officiating. Interment will follow in the Northwood Cemetery.
