On the evening of Friday, 20 October 1972 at approximately 2330 hours, then Patrolman Sweeney was on patrol on Concord Pike in the area of Independence Mall. As Patrolman Sweeney was preparing to make a turn, his squad car was struck from the rear by a speeding vehicle and burst into flames. As a result of his injuries, Patrolman Sweeney passed away on 30 November 1972.
Patrolman Sweeney was posthumously promoted to the rank of Corporal. When constructed, the new New Castle County Police HQ was named in his honor. His badge number was also retired from further use.
Corporal Sweeney was a graduate of Salesianum Class Of 1964. He left behind a wife, daughter and son.
