Harriet Ilo Harkins was born November 23, 1913, in Rantoul, Kansas. She was the daughter of Benjamin Floyd and Jennie June (Needham) Carter. She grew up on a farm in Rantoul, Kansas, and at the time of her husband's discharge from the service, they purchased a farm near Lane, moved to Emporia, Kansas in 1964, and Ottawa in 1980. In 1995, Ilo moved to a nursing home in Goddard, Kansas, where she made her home until her death Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at the age of ninety-two years.

She graduated from Lane High School in Lane, Kansas with the class of 1933.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church of Ottawa and the Navy Mothers' Club in Emporia.

Ilo was a homemaker. She always enjoyed raising her plants, especially, lots of African violets. She also spent a great deal of time researching her family's genealogy. She would often crochet and enjoyed quilting, but most important to Harriet was her beloved family.

On April 24, 1943, Ilo was united in marriage with Dennis Max Harkins in Ottawa, Kansas. He preceded her in death on May 1, 1987.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Wilbur Harkins; one sister, Mildred Higdon; and three brothers, Benjamin Lafayette Carter, Henry Carter, Earl Carter.

She is survived by her daughter, Dixie Lee Zahrowski and her husband, Larry, of Gillette, Wyoming; seven sons, Valerian Harkins of Oroville, California, Henry D. Harkins and his wife, Ruth Ann, of Garden Plains, Kansas, Dennis Harkins and his wife, Jessica, of Ottawa, Phillip Harkins and his wife, Elaine, of Longview, Texas, Dr. Davy Joe Harkins and his wife, Gail, of El Dorado, Kansas, Victor Harkins of Cassoday, Kansas, Roger Harkins and his wife, Deanna, of Osage City, Kansas; and numerous grandchildren.

SERVICES: A Funeral Mass will be held from Sacred Heart Catholic Church 10:00AM Monday, May 8, 2006.

IN STATE: Mrs. Harkins will lie in state after 10:00AM Saturday at Dengel & Son Mortuary to service hour, where a rosary will be said at 7:00PM, Sunday. The family will meet with friends following the rosary from 7:30 - 8:30PM.

CEMETERY: Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, Kansas.

MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorials to Sacred Heart School c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
