Joseph Vereen was the son of Samuel Porter Vereen & Rebecca F. Wilson Vereen.
He married Ann Rebecca Waller Vereen and they lived in a plantation in the Bear Bluff area of Conway, South Carolina their graves are in front of a house that still has pieces of wood from the original house. That house has been rebuilt from some of the wood from the old house and it is occupied still today by a Vereen descendant.

Together they had 8 children:

Samuel W. Vereen
Margaret Jane Vereen
Benjamin Jackson Vereen
Archibald W. Vereen
Thomas A. Vereen
Frosty Ann Vereen
Susan Carolyn Vereen

Confederate Soldier: Co. E., 26th SC Inf. Reg, CSA

(Joseph DeWitt Vereen had red hair, grey eyes and stood only 5'4" tall.)
