Her son Judge Harry T. Toulmin spelled his mother's name Amante, as do other Toulmin descendants today. History of Alabama and Dictionary of Alabama Biography, Volume 4 by Thomas M. Owen, vol. 4, pp.1677-78, gives her name Amante Elizabeth Juzan, daughter of Daniel JUZAN and his second wife, Maria Louisa LAURENDINE. Marie Louisa Laurendine Juzan was a granddaughter of Catherine Laurendine, a slave owner who owned the grandmother and mother of Marie Laveau, the legendary Voodoo Queen of New Orleans.
She and Gen. Toulmin married in Mobile County in 13 May 1821, and the marriage record gives her name Armantha Jusan.
The 1860 census gives her name Amant E. Toulmin, exactly as the tombstone does, while the 1850 census spells it Amant Toulmin.
Descendants of Amante Juzan Toulmin belong to the First Families of Louisiana.
