Louis L. Kuehn was the son of Lucas (1829-1877) and Margaretha L Klein (1834-1907) Kuehn. He grew up on a farm in St. Clair County, outside of Mascoutah.
He married Martha Schaeffer (1857-1921) at Holy Childhood Church, Mascoutah, IL on Feb 22, 1881.
They had eleven children: Katie, Emma, Martha, Louis D., Richard J., Edward H., Erwin F., Ida, Fred, George, and a twin of George that died at birth.
Louis' brother Frank, married Martha's sister Maggie. Louis and Martha lived in the Mascoutah area until about 1894 when they moved their family to a farm in Jackson County, Illinois.
