John Gray II, of Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts, was born March 26, 1679 to John Gray I and an unknown wife. The Gray family came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066 and remained there for several centuries, becoming a very prominent family and intermarrying with royalty. Upon the death of King Edward VI, Lady Jane Grey became queen of England and ruled unwillingly for nine days before being unseated by Mary, half sister of Edward. John Gray I, our immigrant ancestor, a one-armed pensioner, lost his arm in the British Navy and was on half pay. He came to America early in the seventeenth century, his family possessing the Lordship of Gray, and landed in New England. He and his wife had six sons, including John Gray II. John Gray II married Ruth Hibbard or Hebbard April 28, 1704 at Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts and known children of there's were: John III and Ruth. Thirty two year old John II died February 29, 1712 at Beverly and is believed buried in that area.
