John was the youngest child of James W. Hill, who came to Texas from Mississippi before the Civil War and by the 1870s had settled in the area of Lancaster in Dallas County. His father died either before or not long after his birth. His mother, Margret, remarried in 1877 to Jesse Clardy of neighboring Ellis County and had four more children, half-siblings with whom John was raised along with his two older full sisters.
As an adult John went to Arkansas where he married Ora Bullock in 1905. In 1920 the Hills were living in McCurtain County, Oklahoma, near John's brother Bob Clardy, but they returned to Arkansas, settling in Stuttgart.
