Melissa Lewis Dies at 88
Melissa Manwill Lewis, 88, 610 W. 1st S., Provo, died this morning at her residence of causes incident to age. She was born Aug. 5, 1874, in Payson, a daughter of John Ferrington and Emily Brown Manwill.
She married Jesse William Lewis Jr. on June 30, 1897, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died April 18, 1922.
She was educated in the Payson schools and at BY Academy. She was a member of the BYU Emeritus Club.
After her marriage, they lived in Knighsville, Juab County, and moved to LaGrande, Ore., and Union, Ore., and then to Mammoth in 1907 where she and Mr. Lewis were school teachers. When Mr. Lewis was called on an LDS mission in 1900, Mrs. Lewis taught school to support her family.
They moved to Provo in June, 1920, where she has since resided. After her husband's death in 1922, she maintained her home and reared her children; was employed in the county treasurer and county assessor office.
She was a member of the LDS Church, serving as president in the Primary, YWMIA, Relief Society. She was also a visiting teacher, member of the Singing Mothers and was active in genealogy work.
She was a member of the DUP Camp Three where she held several offices. During World I she had over 2,000 hours as a Red Cross worker. She was a member of the Social Art Club, the Alice Louise Reynolds Club, and of the Women's Council of Provo. She loved to travel, and had gone to all parts of the USA, Canada and Mexico. Her hobbies were correspondence and reading.
Surviving are four sons and one daughter, J. Earl Lewis, Mrs. Ervan J. (Natella) Nelson, Provo; Kenneth M. Lewis, Antioch, Calif., Dean C. Lewis, Salt Lake City; Sterling W. Lewis, Boulder, Nev.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at noon in the Berg Drawing Room Chapel. Bishop Leo Allen of the Provo 11th Ward will officiate. Friends may call at the mortuary Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 and Thursday prior to services. Interment will be in the Provo City Cemetery.
